who we are

We founded the Courage Fund to help the brave Cambodian dissidents who risk their lives for freedom and democracy. Facing great odds, these front line activists stand up for the common good, with the knowledge that their actions will bring themselves and their families into terrible danger. Once freed, these former prisoners are often unable to regain their former jobs and struggle to make ends meet for themselves and their families.

Cambodian opposition leader and women’s rights advocate Mu Sochua, along with other activists, co-founded the Courage Fund to bring awareness and crucial support for current and former political prisoners in Cambodia. Our team is based in Cambodia and in the United States, and we also count on volunteers around the world to continue our work.

what we do

We provide relief to front line activists who were killed, arrested, intimidated, threatened, or monitored for peacefully carrying out their pro-democracy work.

Our aim is to raise and distribute money to help these activists and their families. These funds are used in a variety of ways:

Legal fees

Small business capital

Support for families of imprisoned activists

Rehabilitation

Basic needs (food, clothing, shelter, medicine)

Education scholarships

Employment costs

Medical treatment

Our team identifies activists at risk and provides them with the resources they need. We are committed to transparency and accountability, ensuring that these donations are used in the most effective way to support these brave individuals.

ABOUT DEMOCRACY IN cAMBODIA

Once a fledgling democracy recovering from years of dictatorship and warfare, over the last 20 years Cambodia has regressed, becoming increasingly more authoritarian. Politicians, activists, and journalists face violence and intimidation for to their work, and independent news sources are silenced. The right to peaceful assembly is regularly repressed, police routinely conduct searches without warrants, government officials are openly corrupt, and farmers frequently have their land unlawfully confiscated.

Despite these dangers, activists continue to risk their lives on behalf of a free Cambodia, and the Courage Fund is there to assist them in this struggle.
