Ke Khim

Ke Khim saw his fellow Cambodian citizens suffer from government land grabs and other abuses. Rather than stand by and watch, he decided to defend their rights through nonviolent protest.

For his bravery, he was charged with participating in an insurrectionary movement and, in a trial that did not meet international fair trial standards, sentenced to seven years in jail on July 21, 2015. He was finally released after receiving a pardon from the king on August 28, 2018. In total, he spent three years and 24 days in prison.

Now out of prison, he continues to struggle. As a result of his imprisonment, he is now divorced and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He wants nothing more than to rebuild his life so that he can support his two children and send them to school. His dream is to be able to purchase a tuk-tuk so he can earn a living.

Crime: Participating in an insurrectionary movement (articles 456 and 457 of the Criminal Code)

Imprisonment: Three years and 24 days
