Victims of these injustices include members and supporters of the opposition party, land right activists, environmental activists, union leaders, human rights defenders, journalists, and monks. Yea thong
Yea Thong was jailed for three years for defending victims of government land grabs. While in prison, his children were forced to drop out of school. Once released from prison, Yea Thong was diagnosed with bone cancer.
ke khim
Ke Khim saw his fellow Cambodians fall prey to government land grabs and injustices, so he decided to stand up for their rights. For his participation in a nonviolent protest, he was sent to prison. The ordeal took a toll on his family – he is now divorced and struggling to support his two children.
Kong Mas
In a Facebook post, activist and opposition party member Kong Mas voiced his support for sanctions aimed at forcing the Cambodian government to improve its human rights record. He was then arrested and charged with “incitement and insulting,” which carry a sentence of six months to two years in prison.
Ouk Pich Samnang
Ouk Pich Samnang was fed up with unjust government land grabs and evictions. When he protested in support of the evicted families, he was arrested 2014. Despite being released on bail, Pich Samnang still faces charges including participation in an insurrection, intentional violence, obstructing public officials, and joining a criminal association.
Chhay Roth
Land rights activist Chhay Roth was arrested in January 2019 for peacefully protesting a government land grab in his village. He remains in prison awaiting trial for protecting access to property collectively owned by 100 nearby families.
